Default How often do you chnge your oil?

I tend to do an oil change every 4500 miles or so and always go with 5-20 motorcraft synthetic blend and a motorcraft oil filter.

What say you? how often do you change the oil in your car and what do you use?

Fox bodies and other 5.0's need not apply since you just add a quart every week.

It's a shame that you dont drive it much. I love your car and it's one of the few pre-99's that i wouldn't mind rockin'.

i dont get why you guys waite til 5k miles. just because the oil will withstand 5k miles of use doesnt mean it you should. considering if your oil is still good you still have shit floating around in it so doesnt seem like a good idea at all.

i use castrol edge full synthetic 5/20 change it every3k miles or 3 months if i dont put that many miles on the car

Todays Full Syn Oils 5k is a walk in the park...Amsoil is rated over 10K I believe (someone check that).

The owners manuel in "most" even go up to 7500 miles between service for regular oil.

This isn't the product your daddy used in the 70's.

But, if it makes you feel al warm & fuzzy to do it....go for it.

Daily driver 93 Nissan Truck, every 5K miles, Mobil extended protection 5w20, Motorcraft big FL-1A filter

Charger, did it at the first 1K miles, and will do it every 3K miles, Mobil1 0w40 (European formula), Mobil1 M210 filter.

When my Mustang was running, I would change it whenever I went racing. Didn't see much street driving towards the end. When it was my DD, it was every 3K miles w/ Mobil1 5w30 and Motorcraft 820S filter.

And I just found out that in 2008, Chargers got different filter threads. So my Mustang and Charger can use the same exact filters. Easier to stock up on now!

Um Vince...

You might want to read your vehicles owners manual before you comment.

ALL 05+ GT's have a Ford Service Interval of 5000 miles.

That is on synth blend btw. Full synth is even more durable.

im not talking about the longevity of the oil im talking about even if the oil lasts 7500 miles there is still going to be particals of crap in the oil that is bad for the engine that your letting float around in

vince unless you're completely cleaning your engine every 3k miles you're always gonna have particles in the oil right when you do an oil change.

Dude, srsly???

How do you think the particles are in there??? Its the filter that doesn't out last the oil.

Me I usually do it between 4K-5K on Mobil 1 5w20 and a motorcraft filter. If particles bother you so much, then why not change just the filter itself between intervals??
For example:

5K mark = change filter and oil
the next 2.5K miles = change just filter and add 1 qt of oil
then the next 2.5K = change filter and oil again

.....and so on and so forth.

To me its just a waste of $$ to be buying filters every other oil change, but it can help your engine protect against sludge.

i change both the slot car and the cobra right around 5,000 miles. i use royal purple full synthetic [5w30 for the slot car, 5w20 for the cobra] and a new filter, along with using some gunk engine flush.

it's worked pretty good so far.

Why did you settle at 3K miles or 3 months to be the ultimate time to change your oil? Jiffy Lube commercial?

I suggest doing some research on oil and you will understand why their are so many bullet holes in your theory of oil change intervals. Start with bob the oil guy forums.

Ford 01 Focus - 10w30 Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5000 miles
Ford 05 F150 FX4 - 10w20 Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5000 miles
Ford 1995 Mustang GT - 15w50 Mobile 1 full synthetic once a year (500 miles or less)
Ford 07 Mustang GT - 10w20 Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5000 miles

I stay towards the under 5K frequency regimen and use Mobil-1... unless I find a sale on RP that I can afford at that time!

-Its what works for me, I have no regrets.

nope. my dad has told me and thats what my auto shop teacher told me...my dad does it with his cummins and you know what the thing has over 300k miles on the engine and still running strong tranny lasted 250k miles. plus i rather spend the extra 20 bucks here and there then have to worry after 100k miles if the engine is gonna be strong still.

i don't see what the big deal is i prefer to keep the oil a lil fresher? is that a bad thing?

Nick, synthetic blends suck ass. Spend a few more bucks if you truly want to get the benefits of a full synthetic oil. Anyway:

1991 5oh- 7 quarts of Royal Purple 5w30 and a Mobil1 filter. I'll be changing the oil every 3k miles or sooner if the car sees regular track time.

I agree with you Vince. Much caution should be taken when it comes to your oil. But you should be aware that there are many treatment packages within oils these days, even "dino" oils, as they are so quaintly referred to as, have a significant amount of treatment. Actually, only 10% of "conventional" oil is actually that beautiful black gold. The rest is all the stuff those guys with thick glasses and white robes make.

So back to your concerns, Vince, about the absorbing abilities of the oil, a few of those packages are specifically designed to just do that, absorb crap in the oil. Whether that be broken down oil, something left from the initial build of the motor, most anything a relatively decently maintained engine could have, the oil is designed to carry it. Without harming your engine!

Now if you are thinking ,"Hey there are chunks of metal and plastic from my motor just running, right brah?" Wrong! If your motor is in any kind of respectable shape, you should have very little engine wear. And by engine wear I am talking about the main bearings, cylinder walls, valve train, anything really in the motor that has something putting pressure on it and or moves. Good oil will have a great ability to maintain pressure over its expected lifetime. Good oil pressure keeps those moving parts from making harsh contact, or any contact in the case of your main bearings. It creates a small barrier, most of it from pressure, some of it just from its chemical structure, to protect those parts. It is this quality, the pressure capacity of oil, that significantly contributes to the health of your engine.

Just because your oil is darker than when you put it in, doesn't mean it is finished. Many synthetic oils are only getting started by the 2,000 or 3,000 mile mark. Are you killing your motor by changing it 500 or a 1000 miles later? Probably not. I have a diesel and I change the oil every 7,500 miles. Why? Because the oil that I run recommends that. Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40. Over 30,000 miles of doing this, I still have high compression and good cylinder sealing, and good running oil pressure. My engine just ticked over 215,000 miles.

And your dads Cummins? It has more to do with the overall design and construction of that engine than just the oil changes, that allows that engine to keep charging hard. They are known to easily do 500,000 miles. And with proper care, a million; without major overhaul!

I am really confused now. Your using the maintance schedule of a diesal truck engine to service your mustang? And your telling people when they should change there oil on there modifed high performance v8's based on when your dad changes the oil in his truck? I don't think you should be allowed to give tech advise anymore.

The OEM service interval for a 2001-2004 Dodge 2500 w/Cummins diesel is every 7500 miles. For the generation prior it is 6000 miles.
